About this dataset

Explore the billionaire infographic as 50 state polygons: 48 readable person labels, two missing labels, printed company labels and explicit review notes.

A state polygon photo map transcribed from the image titled “Top Billionaire in Each U.S. State”. All 50 states are present, with Alaska and Hawaii in display insets. 29 states show verified Commons portraits under licenses permitting commercial use and adaptations, with individual author, source and license credits; 21 states retain text because no suitable portrait or matching identity has been verified. The original labels include 46 full names, two surname-only labels (Smith in Utah and VanderSloot in Idaho), and two missing names (Vermont and Louisiana). Company labels reproduce the image and are not verified business affiliations. These are unverified labels transcribed from a user-supplied infographic. Its publisher, date, selection criteria and meaning of state association are unknown. The map does not establish birthplace, residence, popularity, net worth or a current ranking. Gray marks a missing name and amber marks a partial label. Downloaded GeoJSON retains real coordinates. No net-worth figures have been invented.

How to download

  1. 1 Explore the map and click a state to read its transcribed label and source notes.
  2. 2 Download the GeoJSON for a map-ready polygon layer, or the CSV for a state-by-state attribute table.
  3. 3 Open the GeoJSON in GeoDataViewer Studio, QGIS or ArcGIS. Join the CSV using shapeISO (US-CA) or state_code (CA).
  4. 4 Check labels against independent sources before treating the infographic as factual. The source date and ranking methodology are unknown.

FAQ

Is this the current richest person in every US state?

No. This is an unverified image transcription with an unknown publication date and methodology. It should not be used as a current richest-person ranking or as evidence of anyone's residence or net worth.

Which labels are missing or incomplete?

Vermont and Louisiana have no readable person-name labels and are stored as null. Utah says only Smith and Idaho only VanderSloot; these surnames are preserved with partial_label status rather than guessing first names.

Are the company labels verified?

No. They reproduce text and recognizable wordmarks visible in the image. For example, James Duff and Sanderson Farms are the printed Mississippi labels; both the identity and company association need independent checking.

What do the colors mean?

Gray means no readable person label and amber means a surname-only label. Other colors distinguish state polygons. They do not encode net worth, industry, ranking or verified billionaire status.

Which states have photographs, and why do others show text?

29 states have portraits verified on Wikimedia Commons under licenses allowing commercial use and adaptations, or public-domain terms. Each includes author, source, license and display-change credits. The remaining 21 states show the original labels: 15 have no verified freely licensed portrait, four have incomplete or missing names, and two have unresolved matching identities (Andy Sanborn and Timothy Walton). No identity is guessed to fill a photo gap. Photographs do not imply endorsement.

Can I use the files in GIS software?

Yes. The GeoJSON contains all 50 states in WGS 84 with person, company_label, label_status, verification and notes fields. The CSV is an attribute table joined using state_code or shapeISO. Boundary geometry is public domain; the original infographic's content license is unspecified.
