All economy maps read the World Bank Indicators API (World Development Indicators) live in your browser. Values are the World Bank's own published series, refreshed when they republish.

Do I need to download a file to use these maps?

No. The indicator values are fetched from the World Bank API and the country boundaries are fetched from Natural Earth when the page loads, so nothing is hosted or downloaded by GeoDataViewer.
