About this live aurora forecast map
The Space Weather Prediction Center runs the OVATION Prime model to estimate the probability of visible aurora for the next 30–90 minutes. Each purple marker is a forecast grid cell; stronger shading means a higher chance of seeing the lights from that location.
The model updates roughly every five minutes driven by solar wind measurements at the L1 Lagrange point, so this is genuinely a short-term forecast, not a climatology map.
Data is fetched in your browser through our own cached endpoint and rendered locally — no account, no install, nothing you do here is uploaded anywhere. Live feeds are approximate and must not be used for navigation or safety-of-life decisions.
