About this dataset

World Bank global solar resource maps showing Direct Normal Irradiance, Global Horizontal Irradiance, and PV potential at 1km resolution.

The Global Solar Atlas by the World Bank and ESMAP provides free, high-resolution global maps of solar energy resources. It includes Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI), Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI), and photovoltaic (PV) power potential at approximately 1km resolution. Data is available as downloadable GeoTIFF rasters and interactive maps with over 20 years of satellite-derived solar data.

How to download

  1. 1 Open the Global Solar Atlas download page.
  2. 2 Select the desired solar variable (DNI, GHI, PVOUT).
  3. 3 Download the global or country-level GeoTIFF.
  4. 4 Open in GIS for solar energy site suitability analysis.

FAQ

What solar variables are available?

The atlas provides Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI), Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI), Diffuse Horizontal Irradiance (DIF), and PV power potential (PVOUT).

What time period does the data cover?

The solar resource maps represent long-term averages (typically 1994-2018) based on satellite-derived solar radiation data.
