About this dataset

World Resources Institute's global inventory of power plants with location, capacity, fuel type, and ownership data.

The Global Power Plant Database from WRI provides a comprehensive, open-source inventory of power plants worldwide. It includes location (lat/lon), capacity in MW, primary fuel type, ownership, and commissioning year for over 30,000 power plants globally.

How to download

  1. 1 Open the WRI Global Power Plant Database page.
  2. 2 Download the CSV or shapefile with all global records.
  3. 3 Open in QGIS or GeoDataViewer for spatial analysis.

What fuel types are in the database?

Coal, oil, gas, hydro, nuclear, solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, waste, and other types. Each plant is tagged with its primary fuel source.

How up-to-date is the database?

It includes data for over 30,000 power plants with information current to recent years of available official statistics.
