About this dataset

Global population dataset using H3 hexagon grid at various resolutions, optimized for web map visualization and spatial joins.

Kontur Population provides global population estimates using Uber's H3 hexagon grid system at resolutions 4 through 10. The data is derived from multiple sources including WorldPop, GPW, and Facebook HRSL, aggregated to H3 hexagons for efficient spatial analysis and visualization.

How to download

  1. 1 Open the Kontur Population dataset on HDX.

Why use H3 hexagon population data?

Hexagonal grids eliminate the area distortion of rectangular grids, provide uniform neighbor adjacency, and are much faster for spatial joins than irregular census polygons.

What H3 resolution should I use?

Resolutions 8-10 (0.7-6 km² hexagons) are most common for urban population mapping. Resolutions 4-6 suit regional or national analysis.
