FAQ
Where does the movie filming location data come from?
From filming location statements on Wikidata, joined to each place's coordinates, its photograph on Wikimedia Commons and its Wikipedia article — the same open data atlas behind moviescenemap.com. Nothing is scraped from listicles.
What do the fameTier and category fields mean?
fameTier ranks how widely covered a location is (iconic, renowned, notable, deepcut), based on the productions shot there and Wikipedia coverage. category classifies the place: city, castle, landmark, nature, street, studio, region or fictional.
Are video games, anime and manga included?
Yes, but they are placed by where their story is set, not where they were filmed — a game is rendered and an anime is drawn. Their titles carry kind values of game, anime or manga in the titles array.
How are the filming notes licensed?
The location coordinates and production lists are CC0. The filming notes are quotations from English Wikipedia, licensed CC BY-SA 4.0 — attribute them as "English Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0" when reusing.
Why is a film I know missing?
Coverage follows Wikidata, and it is uneven. Some famous productions carry no filming location statement. Add a filming location statement (with a source) to the production's Wikidata item and it appears at the next rebuild.
