Global mountain peak locations from OpenStreetMap, filterable by country and elevation.
Download mountain peak locations worldwide from OpenStreetMap data. Peaks are extracted per country from Geofabrik OSM extracts using osmium, and provided as GeoJSON point files with name, elevation, and prominence attributes.
How to download
- 1 Download the global peaks GeoJSON or pick a specific country.
- 2 Open in GeoDataViewer Studio by dragging the file onto the map.
- 3 Filter by elevation or country using the attribute table.
- 4 Combine with DEM and boundary layers for terrain analysis.

How are peaks extracted?
Peaks are extracted from OpenStreetMap data using the natural=peak and natural=volcano tags via osmium, processed per country from Geofabrik extracts.
What attributes are included?
Each peak includes name, elevation (meters), and OSM ID. Volcanic peaks are tagged where applicable. Prominence data is included when available.
How many peaks are there?
The global dataset contains hundreds of thousands of peaks across 44 countries, with the most densely covered regions being the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, and Rockies.
