About this dataset
Global mangrove extent and change dataset at 25m resolution with annual time series from 1996-present.
Global Mangrove Watch (GMW) provides the most comprehensive global mangrove extent dataset at 25m resolution, with annual time series from 1996 to present. Using JAXA's ALOS PALSAR and ESA's Sentinel-1/2 satellite data, it tracks mangrove forest loss and gain for all mangrove-holding countries.

FAQ
What countries does GMW cover?
GMW covers all 121 countries and territories with mangrove forests, providing consistent global methodology for mangrove mapping.
How accurate is the mangrove classification?
GMW reports overall accuracy of 88-95% depending on region. The dataset distinguishes mangrove from other coastal vegetation using radar (PALSAR) and optical (Sentinel) satellite data.
