About this dataset

USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) providing 1–10 meter resolution DEMs for the United States via The National Map with seamless national coverage.

The USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) — formerly the National Elevation Dataset (NED) — provides high-resolution DEMs for the United States at 1/3, 1, and 2 arc-second resolutions (approximately 10m, 30m, and 60m). 3DEP is transitioning to 1-meter lidar-based DEMs as new acquisitions are completed. All products are freely available through The National Map TNM Download and the USGS AWS public bucket.

How to download

  1. 1 Open The National Map downloader and zoom to your area of interest in the United States.
  2. 2 Select Elevation Products (3DEP) and choose the desired resolution (1m, 10m, 30m, or 60m).
  3. 3 Add the relevant DEM tiles to your cart and proceed to download — no account is needed for TNM.
  4. 4 Alternatively, use the AWS Open Data bucket to programmatically access lidar-derived point clouds and DEM tiles.

FAQ

What is the difference between NED and 3DEP?

NED (National Elevation Dataset) was the legacy USGS seamless elevation product. 3DEP is the current program that is systematically acquiring 1-meter lidar coverage for the conterminous US, with NED products being gradually replaced by higher-resolution lidar-based DEMs.

Is 1-meter lidar DEM coverage available for the entire US yet?

Not yet. 3DEP aims for complete 1-meter lidar coverage of the conterminous US by approximately 2023–2026. Check the USGS 3DEP coverage map for currently available lidar-quality tiles.
