About this dataset

JAXA ALOS World 3D 30-meter global DEM derived from PALSAR stereo SAR imagery with worldwide land coverage and free registration-based download.

ALOS World 3D (AW3D30) is a 30-meter global digital elevation model produced by JAXA from ALOS PRISM stereo imagery. It provides near-global land coverage and is distributed as 1° x 1° GeoTIFF tiles. AW3D30 is widely cited as a high-quality alternative to SRTM and ASTER GDEM, particularly in areas where optical DEMs have cloud-related voids.

How to download

  1. 1 Register a free account on the JAXA ALOS data distribution system.
  2. 2 Log in and navigate to the AW3D30 dataset area on the JAXA FTP portal.
  3. 3 Select the 1° x 1° GeoTIFF tiles for your study area using the tile naming convention (latitude_longitude).
  4. 4 Download the tiles and process them with GDAL or QGIS; note that ocean-area pixels are assigned a nodata value of -9999.

FAQ

How does AW3D30 compare to Copernicus DEM 30m?

Both are 30m global DEMs, but AW3D30 is derived from optical stereo (PRISM) while Copernicus DEM uses TanDEM-X radar. Copernicus DEM generally has fewer artifacts in tropical forests, while AW3D30 may perform better in some arid and high-relief areas.

What is the nodata value in AW3D30?

Ocean and water-body pixels are assigned a nodata value of -9999. Use GDAL to mask these values when mosaicking tiles.
