Download India state and union territory boundaries as GeoJSON: 28 states and 8 union territories in a single FeatureCollection carrying shapeName, shapeISO (IN-MH, IN-TN, IN-KA), and shapeID. The boundaries come from the DataMeet India community map project, which maintains the most widely reused open boundary set for the country, and are simplified to about a 1 km tolerance so the national layer stays around 340 KB. Names are preserved as the source publishes them, including diacritics such as Mahārāshtra and Nāgāland, and the union territories — Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Puducherry, Chandigarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu — appear as separate features alongside the states.

India's state map has changed since — Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh in 2014 and Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised in 2019 — so verify the feature set against your use case before publishing, and check the DataMeet repository for newer releases.
Why do some state names carry diacritics?
The hosted file preserves the source names verbatim, so you will see Mahārāshtra and Nāgāland alongside plain spellings. If your join table uses unaccented names, normalise both sides or match on shapeISO instead.
