About this dataset

Spatial Production Allocation Model providing global crop production and area data for 42 crop types at 10km resolution.

SPAM (Spatial Production Allocation Model) provides global spatial data on crop production, area harvested, and yield for 42 major food and fiber crops at approximately 10km resolution. Developed by IFPRI, it allocates national and sub-national crop statistics to grid cells using a cross-entropy approach with satellite data.

How to download

  1. 1 Open the MapSPAM data portal.
  2. 2 Select the crop type and variable (production, area, yield).
  3. 3 Choose irrigation system (irrigated, rainfed, total).
  4. 4 Download the GeoTIFF raster and analyze in QGIS.

What crops are in SPAM?

SPAM covers 42 crops including wheat, rice, maize, soybeans, cotton, sugarcane, cassava, potatoes, vegetables, fruits, and others, classified by production system (irrigated/rainfed).

What time periods are available?

SPAM has released datasets for 2005 and 2010 reference years, with a 2020 release in development. Each release represents a 3-5 year average around the reference year.
