Find a U.S. County by Location

Find the county or county equivalent for map coordinates, with five-digit FIPS, Census boundaries and 2020–2024 ACS estimates.

Input & limits

WGS 84 coordinates within the 50 states, DC and Puerto Rico. Uses 3,222 generalized 2024 county boundaries; this is a reference lookup, not a legal boundary determination.

What you download

Matching county polygons as GeoJSON and a lookup report with coordinates, FIPS, source and ACS values.

How to use

  1. Enter coordinates, search for a place or choose a point on the optional map.
  2. Choose Find county to load the reference and run the local point-in-polygon query.
  3. Review the county, ambiguity warnings and ACS estimates; download the matching boundary.

Frequently asked questions

What happens near county boundaries?

Generalized boundaries can differ from a precise survey. Boundary points can return multiple candidates; verify jurisdiction using an authoritative local source.

Why can a margin of error be unavailable?

Census special or suppressed values remain null. A missing MOE is not a zero uncertainty. ACS estimates refer to 2020–2024, not a live population count.
