About this dataset

European Commission JRC global building height map at 100m resolution derived from satellite data.

The JRC Global Building Height dataset provides a global map of building height estimates at 100m resolution. It uses a combination of satellite imagery, nightlight data, and population density to estimate mean building height for each grid cell. This dataset enables 3D urban modeling and improved population exposure estimates for disaster risk assessment.

How to download

  1. 1 Open the GHSL data portal.
  2. 2 Select the Building Height product (GHS-BUILT-H).
  3. 3 Choose the resolution (100m) and year.
  4. 4 Download the GeoTIFF and open in GIS.

FAQ

How are building heights estimated?

JRC building heights are estimated using a combination of satellite imagery building footprints, nightlight intensity, and population density in a machine learning model.

What is the accuracy of the height estimates?

The dataset provides mean building height per grid cell (not individual building heights). RMSE is approximately 3-5 meters when validated against reference LiDAR data.
