Global base geographic layer from Overture Maps including land use, water bodies, natural features, and built-up areas.

Overture Maps Base provides foundational geographic layers including land use polygons (residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural), water bodies (lakes, rivers, oceans), natural features (forests, parks, beaches), and built-up area classifications. The data combines OSM, Meta, and other sources into a consistent schema with monthly updates.

How to download

  1. 1 Install Overture CLI ('pip install overturemaps').
  2. 2 Download the base theme for your region ('--type=base').
  3. 3 Convert Parquet to GeoJSON for GIS use.
  4. 4 Load into GIS and filter by land use class or water body type.

How does Overture Base compare to ESA WorldCover?

Overture Base provides vector polygons from OSM and partners (more detailed geometry), while WorldCover provides raster classification at 10m. They complement each other — use Overture for vector analysis and WorldCover for consistent pixel-level classification.
