Choose a source

Compare geographic coverage, file formats and reuse terms before choosing data for your map or analysis.

Health pages map the demographic and health indicators that shape a population: how long people live, how many children they have, and how those numbers have moved over decades.

Every map is loaded live from the World Bank Indicators API and joined to Natural Earth boundaries in the browser, so there is no dataset file to download.

How to choose a source

  • Open the life expectancy map and scrub the timeline to see global convergence since 1990.
  • Switch to the fertility rate map to compare it with life expectancy — the two explain most population growth.
  • Click a country to read its history curve and identify disruptions such as conflicts or epidemics.
  • Cross-check the numbers on the World Bank indicator page, linked from each dataset.

Category FAQ

Category FAQ

Where does the health data come from?

The life expectancy and fertility maps read the World Bank Indicators API live in your browser, using the World Bank's published series (which compile UN and national sources).

Why do some countries have no colour in a given year?

The World Bank does not publish an observation for every country in every year. Countries without a value for the selected year are left uncoloured rather than showing an older figure as if it were current.
