Free Online UTM Zone Finder

Find the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) zone number, latitude band letter, EPSG code, and central meridian for any latitude/longitude coordinate. Essential for GIS data preparation and GPS field work.

What this tool does

Enter any latitude and longitude to instantly get the UTM zone (number and letter), the full EPSG authority code, the central meridian longitude, and whether the location is in the northern or southern hemisphere.

How to use

Type or paste coordinates in decimal degrees (lat, lng). The UTM zone information updates in real time as you type. Click the map to select a location visually.

UTM zones explained

The UTM system divides the world into 60 longitudinal zones of 6° width (numbered 1-60) and 20 latitudinal bands (lettered C-X, skipping I and O). Each zone has its own Transverse Mercator projection.

EPSG codes

Each UTM zone has two EPSG codes: one for the northern hemisphere (EPSG:326XX) and one for the southern hemisphere (EPSG:327XX), where XX is the zone number.

Use cases

Setting the correct CRS for GIS projects, field GPS data collection, surveying, military grid reference, and map projection selection.

Special zones

Some areas use modified UTM zones: Svalbard uses zones 32-36 extended, Norway uses zone 32 extended, and some polar areas use UPS (Universal Polar Stereographic).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do UTM zones work?
The world is divided into 60 zones of 6° longitude each, numbered 1 (180°W-174°W) to 60 (174°E-180°E). Each zone uses a Transverse Mercator projection with its own central meridian.
What is the UTM zone for New York City?
New York City (40.7°N, 74.0°W) is in UTM zone 18N, with EPSG:32618 for the northern hemisphere. The central meridian is 75°W.
What are UTM latitude bands?
UTM latitude bands are 8° zones from 80°S to 84°N, lettered C to X (excluding I and O). For example, band T covers 0°-8°N and band S covers 32°S-40°S.
Why do some zones have irregular boundaries?
Some countries modify UTM zone boundaries to keep administrative units in a single zone. Norway extends zone 32, and Svalbard uses a special zone arrangement.
