FAQ

How do I find the elevation of a location?
Zoom and pan the elevation map to your area, then click or tap on the map to add a marker. The elevation estimate appears in the tools panel. Add more markers to compare elevations between points.
How do I remove an elevation marker?
Click a marker on the map to remove it, or use Clear markers to remove all markers at once.
What units are used for elevation?
Elevation is shown in meters (m).
How accurate is the elevation estimate?
The result is an estimate based on terrain tiles. Accuracy varies by location, zoom level, and the underlying DEM source. For best results, zoom in and click precisely on the point you care about.
What data source is used for terrain elevation?
This page uses Amazon-hosted Terrarium elevation tiles and queries elevation directly from the map terrain surface.
Is this an altitude map or an elevation map?
Both. This tool works as an altitude map and an elevation map: you place markers on the map and read the estimated elevation for each point.
What makes this elevation map different?
You can check elevation directly on a true 3D globe map with terrain enabled. Seeing the elevation query on a real 3D surface can be more intuitive than a flat 2D map, especially for mountains and ridgelines.
Is my location data stored?
No. Markers are created and handled in your browser. GeoDataViewer does not store or log your coordinates.
