Uploading Zipped GIS Datasets (Best Practices)

Learn when to zip GIS datasets before uploading, how to avoid missing sidecar files, and why zip uploads reduce viewer errors.

Some GIS formats are multi-file by design. If you upload only one piece of the dataset, the viewer may not have enough information to render geometry or attributes correctly.

When you should upload a zip

Upload a single .zip archive when:

  • The format includes multiple required sidecar files (common with Shapefile and MapInfo)
  • You want to avoid missing files during drag-and-drop uploads
  • You received a dataset already packaged as a zipped folder (common with FileGDB)
  1. Put all required files for the dataset into one folder.
  2. Zip the folder into one .zip.
  3. Upload the zip file to the appropriate viewer page.
