About this dataset
Daily surface weather and climate variables for North America at 1km resolution from 1980 to present.
Daymet is a collection of daily gridded weather and climate data for North America, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico at 1km spatial resolution from 1980 to present. It provides temperature (max, min), precipitation, shortwave radiation, vapor pressure, snow water equivalent, and day length derived from station observations and interpolation.
How to download
- 1 Open the Daymet data portal at ORNL DAAC.
- 2 Select the desired climate variables and geographic extent.
- 3 Choose the temporal range and output format (NetCDF or CSV).
- 4 Download and open the data in QGIS or analyze with Python/xarray.
FAQ
How does Daymet differ from PRISM?
Daymet provides daily climate data across North America including solar radiation, vapor pressure, and snow parameters that PRISM does not. PRISM offers higher native resolution (800m vs 1km) and is more focused on temperature and precipitation.
Can Daymet data be used in watershed modeling?
Yes. Daymet is widely used in hydrological models (e.g., SWAT, VIC) because it provides daily solar radiation, vapor pressure, and snow water equivalent alongside temperature and precipitation.
