About this dataset
Washington University's annual global PM2.5 surface concentration estimates at 1km resolution from 2000-present.
The Global PM2.5 Surface Concentration dataset from Washington University in St. Louis provides annual estimates of ground-level fine particulate matter (PM2.5) at approximately 1km resolution globally from 2000 to present. It combines satellite aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrievals from MODIS, MISR, and SeaWiFS with chemical transport model simulations and ground monitor data.
How to download
- 1 Open the WashU PM2.5 data page.
- 2 Select the desired year.
- 3 Download the global GeoTIFF PM2.5 surface concentration raster.
- 4 Open in GIS and classify for health exposure analysis.
FAQ
What is PM2.5?
PM2.5 refers to particulate matter with diameter ≤2.5 micrometers, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. It is the most health-relevant air pollutant.
How accurate are the satellite-based estimates?
The dataset has cross-validated R² of 0.8-0.9 when compared with ground monitors. Accuracy varies by region, with better performance in regions with dense monitoring networks.
