Driving Distance Map FAQ
How does the driving distance map work?
Enter a city name and the tool loads surrounding administrative regions, then queries the OSRM routing engine to calculate real driving times and distances from your origin to each area. Regions are color-coded by travel time.
How accurate are the driving times?
Initial results are straight-line estimates. The tool then fetches real routing data from the OSRM API, which accounts for actual road networks, speed limits, and highway access. Cached results load instantly on repeat visits.
What cities are supported?
You can search for any city worldwide. Chinese cities use detailed district-level boundaries from DataV. International cities use OpenStreetMap administrative boundaries via the Overpass API.
What do the colors mean?
Each color band represents a 30-minute driving interval, from green (under 30 min) to dark red (4.5–5 hours). Regions beyond 5 hours are hidden to keep the map readable.
Can I use this for road trip planning?
Yes. The map gives you a quick visual overview of how far you can drive in a given time, making it perfect for planning weekend getaways, day trips, or multi-city road trips.
Why do some regions show '(est.)'?
Regions marked as estimated use a straight-line distance formula before real routing data arrives. Once the OSRM query completes, these are replaced with actual driving times.
